ONE PIECE
SYSTEM

Our One Piece EPDM
Rubber Roofing System
has ‘NO JOINS’*

Rubber with its light dusting of talc for handling purposes ~ easily washed off after laying

One sheet of rubber covers your entire roof ~
like a table cloth !

The system has a life of 50 years and consists
of a 1.14mm thick EPDM synthetic rubber
sheeting bonded to the roof surface with a
water based ’Decking Adhesive’.

The whole installation process is achieved with
cold adhesives (no heat is involved at all)
~ It can also be ballasted down by covering with
shore or river washed pebbles instead of adhesive

EPDM rubber coverings are sold by the
running m (cut from large sheets measuring
30.4m [100 feet] long) by either:-
9.1 metres (30 feet) wide or
6.1 metres (20 feet) wide or
 3.05 metres (10 feet) wide

FOLDING ~ 6.1m wide rubber is folded along its length before being rolled up. ~ 9.1m wide rubber is folded twice ~ so the width in both cases is reduced to 3m for handling purposes. We then cut to length by cutting through 2 thicknesses (or 3 in the case of the 9.1m wide rubber) then flat roll rubber to c400mm x 3m. Finally we fold the 3m length to c750mm and box up for dispatch. This makes handling in a stout box 750 x 600 x 350mm relatively easy.

If a join in the rubber is absolutely necessary it can be effected by a 100mm (4") wide overlap and the use of Impact Bonding Adhesive and its Primer.

APPLICATION METHODS ~
For an estimate see Price Estimator section.

One Piece EPDM rubber sheeting is sold by the running metre to the nearest 0.1 metre.

Decking Adhesive to bond rubber to decking. The decking should have a stable,
clean, dry timber, concrete, masonry, felt or metal (eg. lead, zinc, aluminium etc.)
surface which is free of sharps. ~ Decking Adhesive Covers about 2.2 sm / litre.
This water based user friendly adhesive has been specially designed to enable the
rubber to be peeled back and re-laid for re-positioning or assisting with detailing
edges etc. The rubber may hug the surface so undulations or unevenness may
show through. This may not effect the waterproof function but if a smooth
appearance is required the surface may need preparation (ie. levelling off or
covering with thin plywood) prior to laying the rubber membrane.

As the Decking Adhesive is Water Based it needs the surface to which it is to be
bonded to be absorbent eg masonry, timber, old felt etc, but not lead, aluminium,
fibreglass, resin coated substrates etc. If it is not absorbent then the Decking Adhesive will not bond satisfactorily and the Impact Bonding Adhesive System will need to be used. (See below).

*Rubber is calendered into large strips which are vulcanised together creating these large sheets.

ADDITIONAL ACCESSORIES relating to the One Piece System

If there are any joins or upstands then we offer small amounts of additional materials which we sell by the metre or by the kg in a range of tin sizes to suit all sizes of project as follows:-

 Impact Bonding Adhesive
Coverage rate is for both sides = 1 to 1.25 sqm / litre available in a variety of
tin sizes to suit your project.

For bonding:-
1)Rubber to masonry, timber, felt (assuming clean and well secured) and other
upstand details ~ no primer required
2)Rubber sheets together to form a join
3)Formable Rubber for sealing external corners, pipes etc where stretching
round compound shapes is required (see below)
[This adhesive needs to be applied to both sides and allowed to dry sufficiently so
that it becomes tacky enough to allow touching without leaving a residue on a gloved
hand. Then the rubber can be firmed into place and rolled down - See note about One
Piece Primer use below].

Formable Rubber for corners, pipes etc.
Formable Rubber is uncured rubber which cures slowly to the formed shape and hence is relatively stress free. It is available by the running metre x 225 mm (about 9")wide. This is stretched tacky side downwards over the corner or shape and firmed onto the area of sheet rubber and other substrate (masonry, timber etc) previously coated with One Piece Primer (and allowed to dry (see below) then rolled to effect a bond.

One Piece Primer. Wherever the Impact Bonding Adhesive is to be applied to the sheet rubber, the rubber must be cleaned (soap and water, rinse and dry) and then primed with One Piece Primer. This primer need only be used on the sheet rubber (ie. not the masonry or timber unless used with the Formable Rubber, when the Impact Bonding is not used).

To Join Rubber Sheets Together. Each edge of the rubber to be joined needs to be coated with a strip 100mm (4") wide of the Impact Bonding Adhesive and allowed to become tacky (as above) before impacting together to effect a sound join. A repair can be effected similarly using a patch piece.

Water Cut Off Mastic. Where the roof to be covered with the One Piece EPDM covering adjoins an existing roof which does not form art of the current scope of work (eg terraced garage roof) then a Water Cut Off Mastic should be applied. This mastic is deposited in beads in place of Decking Adhesive at the edges and covered

with the rubber membrane. A smooth clamping batten of treated timber or similar is screwed to the deck so as to compress the beads to form a seal. (The fastener heads need to be below the surface of the batten). A covering strip of EPDM should then be bonded over the smooth batten and onto the deck either side to weatherproof the batten, as if it were a rubber to rubber join.

Upstands. (Any part of a flat roof which rises above roof level). Where there is a change of angle (upward off the deck) then Impact Bonding Adhesive should be used instead of Decking Adhesive for a min of 200mm (8") on the upstand side and 300mm (12") on the flat roof side of the change of angle (ie at all flashing and upstand areas).
